Labioplasty

The increased exposure of female genitalia over the years in magazines and the internet has led to more critical appraisal of female genital aesthetics by both men and women. Labia minora (smaller inner genital “lips”) that extend beyond the labia majora (larger outer genital “lips”) are both aesthetically and functionally unsatisfactory for many women. Many women feel their sexual enjoyment may be enhanced by reducing the size of their labia. Others are considering genital surgery for hygienic reasons or to relieve chafing and irritation caused by form fitting clothes.

Labioplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reduction of the size of the labia minora. It can be done under sedation with local anesthesia or under general anesthesia (asleep). This outpatient surgery typically takes less than one hour. The stitches that are placed dissolve over time so there is no need to have them removed. Post-operative restrictions include avoiding tight undergarments or pants that may chafe the area, no sexual activity, no horseback riding, and no bike riding for six weeks. Once the healing is complete, many studies show increased confidence, self-esteem, and sexual pleasure.
